The virtual exhibition, Women of a New Tribe, was generously funded by IBM
This virtual exhibition uses oral histories, images and biographies to share the remarkable and inspirational stories of the local participants in this national exhibition of photographs by South Carolina photographer, Jerry Taliaferro.
Local participants come from all walks of life. They are mothers and daughters, educators, community activists, performing artists, as well as presidents and CEOs of large companies and major foundations. They represent the essence of black women and their incalculable contributions to human kind.

What Manner of Woman?
by Jerry TaliaferroWhat Manner of woman is this?
Who as cargo in the dark damp hole of slave ships
The Middle Passage crossed.
This Mother of a new race whose siiues into a
Cruel cradle of Bondage were lain.
What measure of a Woman is She
Who watched a nation birthed
And through the same tearful eyes watched Child and Man
Torn away and sold.
Her many hues, textures and forms speaks to
Her American Experience…
…Her beauty is the beauty of the first people and of the
World’s Newest Tribe.”
